Artifact 3
Analysis
My third artifact for my portfolio is the third CIP I wrote for English 101. In this assignment we were meant to create a Critical-Inquiry-Question (CIQ) that eventually would be the topic of our first essay. It begins with free writing, and then forming a polished CIQ, then we were to rewrite the CIQ in two different formats, a “if-then” and a “to what extent” question. I chose this assignment because it serves as an example of when I first begin to embody the investigative writing genre. Before this class I was always writing in a style that was very static. I would state my point and then go on to list the countless reasons why my point was right. With this assignment I finally begin to write in a different style.
In this new style I write by first asking a question, one that I don’t know the answer to. Then I go on to try to find that answer if four to five pages. It’s a small difference, since in the end I am still trying to prove my point to some extent. I am not used to writing questions for formal papers. For instance, “What is the relationship and the effects social dependence and personal independence have with each other?” This question isn’t what I ended up using for my essay, since it’s a pretty ambiguous question. However, it is a perfect example of asking questions with answers I did not know. This CIQ is great as an example of my growth as a writer in this class.
